Welcome to Plymouth Counselling. We are a private practice with three decades of experience in providing counselling and psychotherapy for individuals and couples, as well as employee support for businesses and organisations across Devon and

Cornwall. Our team of dedicated counsellors are careful to always adapt their approach to your particular situation, whatever it may be. Along with offering confidential, personalised couples counselling, our personal counselling can also offer help with the following; addiction, anxiety, bereavement, depression, eating disorders, gender and identity issues, menopause, sexual issues, workplace stress and young people. You can choose either face to face or on-line options which fit best with you life-style and needs.

How Counselling and Psychotherapy can help you

We all encounter problems in life from time to time. Whether you are in a relationship or not, it can often feel like you are alone and have no way out. Finding that balance between the daily life stresses of personal/work life and emotional stability is far from easy, and it can lead to problems with your partner or other maladaptive behaviours like addiction.

Our experienced couples counselling and psychotherapy in Plymouth gives you a space to actively explore the root cause of your problems, how they adversely affect your life, and develop a personalised way to move past them. Seeing an integrative specialist at our private practice takes the weight off your shoulders; we are here to supply the specific kind of help you need, in a way that makes sense to you.

Couples Counselling

Sometimes, relationships break down. You may be struggling to communicate, dealing with an affair, contemplating separation, or just generally feel like you are in a state of frustration and insecurity. We will assign the right specialist for your situation and work towards understanding how past experiences contribute to where you are now, thereby unravelling the knots of your relationship and enabling you to move forward in a healthier way.

Please visit our Couples Counselling page for more information.

Individual Counselling

Along with providing personalised help to couples, our team of practitioners also offer one-to-one counselling and specialise in supplying people with the tools to confront and overcome a range of issues. This includes working with young people and adults who need a place to discuss their gender, sexuality, or identity, along with targeted help for other areas such as bereavement and addiction.

One of the main bodies overseeing the registration and accreditation of counsellors in the UK is the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP).

Approaches to therapy

Psychodynamic Therapy - Emphasises the importance of the unconscious mind and past experiences in explaining current behaviour and emotions.

Integrative - Where several distinct modes of counselling and psychotherapy are combined to address an individual’s problems in a personalised way.

Person-centred - A non-judgemental way of working whereby the counsellor gives you the floor to explore challenging emotions in your own preferred way, creating the right conditions for increasing self-awareness and reaching your fullest potential.

Humanistic - Encourages you to take responsibility for their thoughts and actions, with a focus on developing a stronger, more holistic idea of one’s true self as a way of moving past certain challenging issues.

Relational - Where your therapist prioritises your ways of relating to other people as a route into understanding the problems in your life.

Transactional Analysis - Helps you understand the exact way in which you communicate with others to develop a clearer understanding of your behaviours and emotions.
